Historical Note

Formally organized in 1939, the Wyoming Homemakers Council is an offshoot of the Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service. It is an organization for rural women to primarily serve as a place for social activities and to discuss homemaking practices and issues. Later, the council took an interest in community, educational, and civic issues. In 1994, the council was renamed the Wyoming Association for Family and Community Education.

In 1946, with funds provided by Susan J. Quealy, a rural women’s recognition program was begun in cooperation with the Wyoming Homemakers Council and the University of Wyoming’s Cooperative Extension Service. Ms Quealy, a rural homemaker from Kemmerer, WY, felt farm women did not receive enough recognition for their efforts. The first four Quealy award recipients were selected based on their contributions to leadership and community service. In 1961Quealy award recipients organized the Quealy Club, which meets annually to welcome the year’s four inductees and to conduct business.
