Biographical Note

Frances Edith Francis was born January 25, 1890 in Laramie, Wyoming, to an English father and Scotish mother. The family operated a ranch near Hecla.

In 1917, Edith applied to the Red Cross for work in the welfare service overseas. Her application was declined. Following her sweetheart's death in Belgium in November 1917, she redoubled her efforts and applied again, this time asking Senator F.E. Warren for assistance. She was accepted in October 1918 and sent to France, where she worked in Red Cross recreation huts. During a portion of that time, Helen Coleman Worley serived as her assistant. They remained close.

Following the war, Edith returned to Wyoming. In 1923, she married Danish immigrant Nels Elkar and continued to ranch in the Happy Jack area of Southeast Wyoming. Edith died on April 3, 1932 and is buried in Cheyenne.
