Historical Note

Rev. Charles Gilbert held the first Episcopal Church service in Cheyenne in 1867. Rev. Joseph Cook was later assigned to serve as missionary of the Episcopal Church in Cheyenne. He organized a local church in January 1868. It was named St. Mark’s, after the church in Philadelphia which, it is believed, donated $1,000 to the Cheyenne church (research instigated by Rev. McGinnis in 1961 was unable to confirm this donation). The Union Pacific Railroad donated two town lots, at 18th and Carey, for a church building. The building was completed in August 1868. A rectory was completed one year later. In 1888, a new building was erected at 19th and Central, where the church continues to serve its parishioners.

Separated Material

H53-59, album and scrapbook donated by Alice Barber Rawson. These materials are not included in the St. Mark's Episcopal Church collection. See H53-59A.

The origin of the association of this collection number with the St. Mark's Episcopal Church records may stem from the donation of the "Holy Matrimony: The Service and Certificate" for Amos Walker Barber and Amelia Kent at St. Mark's Church December 14, 1892 by Alice Barber Rawson, accessioned as H66-225, but likely consolidated at some point with H53-59, also donated by Rawson. The Service book and certificate were deaccessioned and transferred to the Wyoming State Museum in 1999.
