Morris Dean Kemper, 88, of Cheyenne, died April 2 at Davis Hospice Center.
He was born Aug. 31, 1923, and grew up in Tarkio, Mo. He attended college at the University of Nebraska, Warton American Technical School in Warton, England, and then graduated from the University of Wyoming with an engineering degree. He saw the war coming so he joined the U.S. Army, where he served our country in the European theatre during World War II as a combat engineer. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Victory Medal for his service.
Mr. Kemper was an architect for more than 50 years, designing numerous buildings in Cheyenne which include the Herschler Building, Cheyenne Civic Center, LCCC and several buildings at F.E. Warren AFB, along with the home that his family lived in. He won many awards for his designs.
His favorite thing was his ranch, where he had lived for more than 40 years. He bred and showed Arabian horses. He was often referred to as the horse whisperer. He and his wife, Dona, raised his four children there. He had seven grandchildren that loved and adored him and referred to him as the "Ranch Grandpa."
When his family thinks of him, they think of gentleness, kindness, compassion, a jokester, generosity, creativity and artistry, a loving spirit and, most of all, a great dad.
He is survived by a son, Michael Kemper (Traci) of Oakley, Calif.; three daughters, René Kemper of Douglas, Michélé Rice (Patrick) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Risë Hancock (Royce) of Discovery Bay, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Nolte of Lincoln, Neb.; and seven grandchildren, Austin and Keenan Rice, both of San Francisco, Dorina Kemper of Douglas, Bryson Hancock of Discovery Bay, Hunter and Hope Bentancourt, and Hadley Kemper, all of Oakley.
Mr. Kemper was preceded in death by his wife, Dona J. (Carpenter) Kemper; a brother, Willis Kemper; a sister, Lois Jurich; and his parents, Adolph and Hulda (Hoffman) Kemper.
