Scope and Content

Civil, criminal, and combined dockets and case files, and general records from the Sheridan County Justice of the Peace Courts and later Sheridan County Circuit Court. Cases heard by the Justice of the Peace Courts involved misdemeanor charges. Felony cases were either dismissed or bound over to the County District Court.

Historical Note

Sheridan County was created and organized in 1888 from a portion of Johnson county. The county seat is Sheridan.

The Justice of the Peace courts were discontinued around 1982. Around 1983 the County Circuit Court was established and took over many of the former Justice of the Peace court functions.

Abstract

Sheridan County Justice of the Peace records as maintained by the Wyoming State Archives consist of civil, criminal, and combined court records. They were originally filed with the Justice of the Peace Courts in Sheridan County.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into seven series including: General Records, Big Horn Justice of the Peace records, Carneyville Justice of the Peace records, Clearmont Justice of hte Peace records, Monarch Justice of the Peace records, Sheridan Justice of the Peace precinct 1 records, and Sheridan Justice of the Peace precinct 2 records

Acquisition Information

Records were transferred in multiple groups from 1980 through 2009 from the Sheridan County Justice of the Peace and Circuit Courts.

Unless otherwise noted, originals of records listed in this finding aid are housed at the Wyoming State Archives. Material may be stored off site. Please contact staff to view.
