Historical Note
The Cheyenne Garden Club held its first official meeting in 1936. The club meetings consisted of one speaker presenting the scientific phases of landscaping and horticulture. The rest discussed problems the members had. The Cheyenne Garden Club was organized by Gladys K. Bunten as a study group under American Association of University Women.
The Cheyenne Community Solar Greenhouse was a community effort to build a 5,000 square foot building, heated with solar energy. It was the nation’s first large-scale heated greenhouse designed to provide food and year-round activity for senior citizens. The greenhouse was built by volunteers and originally staffed by senior citizen volunteers. The volunteer pool included people of all ages.
The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens was founded in 1986, based on an earlier project founded in 1977 by the Community Action of Laramie County, the Cheyenne Community Solar Greenhouse. The Botanic Gardens primary purpose is social, providing therapy, education, meaningful work activities and growing and distributing food. The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens was proposed by the "Green Ribbon Task Force" appointed by former Mayor Don Erickson, and was strongly supported by the Cheyenne City Council. It operated as a division of the City of Cheyenne Parks and Recreation Department.
