Biographical Notes
Nolle R. Smith was a native Wyomingite who achieved recognition in a variety of career pursuits around the world. He was a cowboy, a Cheyenne High School and University of Nebraska football player, a member of the Hawaii Territorial Legislature, and Hawaii’s Director of Civil Service. He also worked for the State Department in the Virgin Islands, Ecuador, Haiti, and Brazil.
Ellen Crowley Suyematsu was Wyoming State Librarian, a Cheyenne attorney, a member of the Wyoming Attorney General’s staff, and a member of Wyoming’s House of Representatives. She married fellow lawyer and U.S. District Court judge Tosh Suyematsu.
Smith and the Suyematsus became good friends while Tosh was sent to Hawaii on a temporary assignment for the Attorney General's office and Smith stayed with them often during his visits to Cheyenne.
