Guide to the Wyoming CCC Newsletter Collection

 Collection
Identifier: H97-10

Scope and Content

Four Wyoming Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp newspapers. One of the most interesting aspects of the CCC was each camp newspaper. These informative missives were, for the most part, published twice a month for the benefit of the enrollee. Camp newspapers held information about work projects, camp construction, enrollee names, medical and education information, and topics including jokes and art work from enrollees themselves. A preliminary inventory is included in the folder.

Historical Note

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a federal public work relief program to employ primarily young, unmarried men and teach them marketable skills during the Great Depression. Active between 1933 and 1942, CCC camps employed nearly 3 million men. In Wyoming, camp work included planting trees, building trails, fighting fires, and construction of picnic shelters, signs, and the museum at Guernsey State Park.

"During the existence of the CCC, one collection point, and possibly two, were established to collect camp newsletters. One was located in Chicago at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It is believed that another was located in California. The collection's final destination eventually wound up in the Center for Research Libraries, Chicago. In 1987, a grant was obtained to microfilm the collection by the Center for Research Libraries. The originals were then sent to the states archives if they wanted them." -- Jim Snyder, Wyoming Civilian Conservation Corps Camp Newspapers Preliminary Inventory
