Biographical Note

Minnie Mitchell was born in Crawford Nebraska in 1892. Her family moved to Wyoming in 1896, settling in Lander. Ms. Mitchell taught in rural schools in Fremont and Natrona Counties. She married J.R. Mitchell in 1916 and assisted him with a grocery business. They moved their business to Casper in 1919. Ms. Mitchell served on the Natrona School Board for eight years.

The Mitchells sold their business in 1946 as J.R. sought election to the state legislature. He served in the 1947 and 1949 House of Representatives. He was elected State Treasurer in 1950. Mr. Mitchell died in office in 1952. Governor Frank Barrett appointed Minnie to fill the office until the next general election, making her the first woman State Treasurer for Wyoming. She was later elected to fill the position for the unexpired term. Minnie also became the first woman to serve as Wyoming State Auditor, serving three terms in that office. She closed her career in public office by serving again as State Treasurer, retiring in January 1971. Minnie Mitchell died December 27, 1978 in Cheyenne and is buried in Casper.
