Guide to the Gertrude Ellis Collection
Scope and Content
Scrapbook with cutouts of illustrations, invitations, dance cards, programs, Cheyenne High School ephemera, and a small amount of correspondence. The collection also includes 4 editions of The Elite, 1891-1892, a small newspaper type publication that was apparently issued for theatrical productions, probably at the Cheyenne Opera House.
Of special interest is a paper program and a silk program from the performance of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" by Edwin Booth at the Cheyenne Opera House in 1887.

Biographical Note
Gertrude Ellis was born August 29, 1870 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to local confectioner H.H. Ellis and his wife Adelaide. Gertrude was active in Cheyenne society, attending and hosting many parties and dances as well as frequenting theatrical productions. She was a member of Co. K Wyoming Girl Guards during the Wyoming Statehood celebration in 1890. Her brother Lemuel, continued their father's candy business in Cheyenne.
In 1892, Gertrude married James M. Gilmore in Cheyenne, Wyoming. They operated a ranch in the Red Buttes area until 1901, when they sold the property and moved into Cheyenne. The couple had one daughter, Helen Bess Gilmore Brown. Gertrude passed away in Los Angeles, California in 1952.
