Biographical Note
Luke Murrin was born in County Sligo, Ireland in the 1830s. He immigrated to America around 1849, serving in the 10th Regiment, 193rd Ohio Volunteers from 1861-1865 as Quartermaster and attained the rank of Colonel. He arrived in Cheyenne soon after it was established and ran a successful saloon and wholesale liquors business. Murrin was elected and served in several local offices including Cheyenne's first mayor and first Justice of the Peace in 1868. Murrin was also one of the founding members and first superintendent of the Black Hills and Big Horn Association which led one of the first private mining expeditions to the Black Hills from Cheyenne in the 1870s. He became a naturalized citizen in 1884.
Murrin lived in Cheyenne through at least 1890 and died in Cook County, Illinois, in 1902.
