Guide to the Emma Eames Dobbins Collection
Scope and Content
The Emma Jane Eames Dobbins collection consists of a manuscript by Emma Eames Dobbins titled "Emma Jane" or "the Ox Train". In it she tells of her family’s trip west, Morrisite attack and life at Fort Bridger. The manuscript may have been published as ‘The Ox Trail’ in the 1940’s, according to a letter that lists recipients of copies of the story. "Trail" may be a misprint. There is also a letter to the editor of the Saturday Evening Post concerning publication of the story.
Also in the collection is a scrapbook belonging to Emma Dobbins’ daughter Gertrude Wyoming Dobbins. The scrapbook contains many news clippings from the social pages dating from 1887-1907.

Biographical Note
Emma Eames was born in 1853 in England. Her father converted to Mormonism and moved his family to America. The Eames family traveled to Utah by ox train and once the family reached Salt Lake City Mr. Eames left the Mormons and joined the ‘Morrisites’ a separatist Mormon religion began by John Morris. The Mormons attacked and drove the Morrisites out of Utah, including the Eames family. The family then lived for a number of years at Fort Bridger. In later years the family moved to Denver and finally to Cheyenne where Emma married Asa C. Dobbin, Cheyenne’s first weather station operator, in 1872. Emma lived in Cheyenne until her death in 1932.
