Historical Note

In an effort to understand and evaluate the nation’s growing concerns of "big government" [specifically in the Executive Branch] and its impact on the daily lives of its citizens, the U.S. Congress voted in 1947 to establish a commission to study the problem. This Commission was known as the Hoover Commission. It was charged with making recommendations on ways to limit expenditures in the Executive Branch to the lowest amount consistent with the efficient performance of essential services, activities, and functions, and to eliminate duplication and overlapping of services, activities, and functions. The Commission’s findings were referred to as The Hoover Report. In 1949, citizens from coast to coast formed voluntary, non-profit groups called Citizens Committees for the Hoover Report. Their purpose was public education in support of the recommendations of the Hoover Commission Report.

The first meeting of the Wyoming Citizens Committee for the Hoover Report was held on August 13, 1949, in Casper Wyoming.
