This collection is a group of 5X7 pieces of paper. On the papers are descriptions of General Orders, Specials Orders, Correspondence, Congressial Reports and abstracts from books and diaries pertaining to Fort Phil Kearney.
Book abstracts are from Margaret Carrington’s Absaraka (the first wife of fort commanding officer Col. H.B. Carrington), Frances Grummond Carrington’s My Army Life ( second wife of Col. Carrington, her first husband was killed in the Fetterman Massacre), A.B. Ostrander’s An Army Boy of the Sixties, the Wishart Diary, the Webb Chronological List and Wyoming Annals.

Historical Note
Fort Phil Kearney was built in 1866 near present day Banner, Wyoming to protect emigrant trains from Indians. The fort was the site of the Fetterman Massacre in December 1866 and the Wagon Box Fight in July 1867. Fort Phil Kearney was abandoned in 1868 with the signing of the Great Sioux Treaty and burned by an unknown party.
