Scope and Content

The collection consists of Daniel ("D.C.") Nowlin's correspondence, books, memorabilia, and an obituary. Among the topics in his letters are his family life, personal finances, engineering work in New Mexico and Texas, ranching, teaching and school administration in Lincoln County, New Mexico, ranching in Wyoming, wildlife work in Jackson area and Yellowstone National Park, national politics, and World War I.

Biographical Note

Daniel C. (D.C.) Nowlin (1857-1925) was a game warden for the state of Wyoming (1902-1911) and afterwards a wildlife worker in the Jackson area. From 1877 to 1891, Nowlin worked as an engineer in various capacities, a school teacher, Lincoln County (NM) superintendent of schools and Lincoln County (NM) sheriff. In 1891, he moved to Wyoming and lived in LaBarge, Jackson, and Lander. He represented Uinta County in state the legislature from 1899-1901. In 1912, Nowlin became the first manager of the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming. Near the end of his life he returned to his home of Center Point, Texas.
