Historical Note

The possibility of construction a Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) system was first proposed in 1976 and endorsed by 1983. The proposed particle accelerator project would have produced 20 TeV (tera-electron volts), 20 times larger than any existing project at that time and 5 times larger than the later Large Hadron Collider. By September 1987, bids for 43 proposed sites across the nation were received by the federal Department of Energy, including Wyoming's offer of a site 16 miles east of Cheyenne near Burns.

The Wyoming site did not make the short list, and on November 10, 1988, the DOE announced that a site had been chosen near Waxahachie, Texas. The project was eventually cancelled by congress in 1993.
