Historical Note

Between December 1948 and February 1949, Eastern Wyoming was hit with a series of extreme weather including blizzards, high winds, and below zero temperatures paralyzed transportation, stranded travelers and ranchers, and killed thousands of livestock wintering on the range. The coordinated government response, known as "Operation Snowbound," involved the railroads, Red Cross chapters, Federal and State agencies, local governments, the National Guard, utility companies, and the efforts of private citizens and businesses.
