Scope and Contents

The collection includes fourteen 16mm color films documenting guided camping, hunting and fishing trips into the Big Horn mountains and other locations such as Canada and Alaska. Harold and Opal Rau, for many years operated a gun shop in Sheridan and he was the guide. In addition to the guided trips, there are reels concerning snow skiing with their club; and the All-American Indian Days parade in Sheridan, WY. Five of the films have audio.

Conditions Governing Access

For conservation purposes, access to the original film footage is restricted. The collection has been digitized with support from the Wyoming Humanities Council. The digitized film are in mp4 format and open for research.

Warning - some of the hunting film footage may be offensive in nature.

Biographical / Historical

Harold Rau made numerous wildlife, hunting and fishing films in Wyoming, Canada and Alaska. He operated sporting goods stores in Sheridan, WY and Wichita, KS. Rau was a gun smith and gun maker and started Rau Arms Corporation in El Dorado, KS. He passed away in Kansas on October 17, 2004.

Abstract

Collection of 14 reels of film footage shot by Harold Rau. The footage has been digitized. ProRes 4444 master scans were created. MP4 access copies are linked to the finding aid.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated by Rau Family from Kansas in 2022.

Existence and Location of Copies

The ProRes 4444 (Master) files are stored in the Wyoming Digital Archives. The MP4 (Access) files are saved on the state network. Mp4s are also located in the Archives' Digital Object shared Google Drive for public access and used as links in this finding aid.

Processing Information

Film Footage was digitized between October and November 2023 by The Negative Space. Master copies (ProRes 4444, 1.85 TB, aspect ratio MOV = 2560X1920) and access copies (MP4, 180 GB, aspect ratio 2048x1536) were created. The Wyoming Humanities Council supplied grant funding for the project. The finding aid was completed by Cindy Brown in February 2024.
