Guide to the Carbon County District Court Records

Scope and Content

Carbon County District Court hears felony criminal cases, civil cases including divorce proceedings, and probate cases including settlements of estates, guardianships, involuntary hospitalizations and adoptions. Natuaralization and Coroner's records are also included.

Unless noted, indexes to case files have been retained by the court. Please contact the Clerk of Court for docket numbers before requesting case files.

According to the court, the following case file prefixes are used to denote type: C = Civil CR = Criminal E = Estate (Probate) INQ = Inquest (Coroner) PR = Probate

The collection is generally open for research. Some restricted records include adoption case files, judge's notes, pre-sentence investigations, sanity case files, workers compensation case papers

Historical Note

Carbon County was created by Dakota Territory and was one of the four original counties when Wyoming Territory was organized in 1869. The county seat is Rawlins.
