Scope and Content

The collection consists mainly of scrapbooks about the deputy US Marshals, Cheyenne social life, and the Cheyenne chapter of the National Secretaries’ Association. The scrapbooks contain personal correspondence, newspaper articles, photographs, and event programs. Of particular interest are personal letters during WWII, women and women’s organizations in Cheyenne, concerts, and the Baptist Church

Biographical / Historical

Esther Duerksen (1912-1996) was born in Maryland and raised in Billings, Montana with some time spent in Wisconsin and Greybull, Wyoming. After graduating from high school in Greybull, Wyoming in 1931, she worked as a secretary for the superintendent of Standard Oil in Greybull, WPA administrator L.G. “Pat” Flannery, the US Air Force in 1943 and the US Marshal’s Office in 1944. In 1944, she became Wyoming’s first female deputy United States Marshal, and served in that position until her retirement in 1968. She was also active in the Cheyenne chapter of the National Secretaries’ Association from 1944 to 1969. Esther married Dan E. Duerksen, an engineer with the Union Pacific Railroad, in 1935 in Greybull. She died on May 14, 1996
