Guide to the William A. Carter Collection
Scope and Content
The collection consists mainly of family correspondence and financial records from his stores and ranches. Of particular interest are an 1857 diary of Carter’s journey to Fort Bridger, financial dealings with soldiers, records of his daughter, Virginia Bridger Hahn, and correspondence and various records about family members

Biographical / Historical
William A. Carter (1818-1881) was a sutler and probate judge at Fort Bridger from 1859 until his death in 1881. Carter was a key player in the economic development of this corner of Wyoming. He had several businesses in the area and a ranch and was a justice of the peace. After his death, his wife, Mary Eliza Carter, assumed his commercial and livestock ventures
