Biographical / Historical

Norman D. King (1901-1972) was born on June 1, 1901 in Cleveland, Ohio. The family later moved to the Albin, Wyoming area. King moved to Cheyenne and worked on Railway Mail Service for many years. He married Stella Clark in 1926

King later enlisted into the military. He initially served in the cavalry and later oversaw ROTC and the Army Reserve. He quickly rose through the ranks and by the early years of World War II was commandant of the Wyoming Military District headquartered in Casper. He later served with Army Intelligence in England and after the war, was an investigator during the Nuremburg trials. After retiring as a full colonel, he was active in veteran groups, such as the American Legion

King had an avid interest in the history of the American West and soon amassed a massive collection of books, magazines and articles. Between 1954 and 1972 he transferred much of his collection to the Wyoming Historical Department. Many of his books were incorporated into the department’s library. Norman D. King died in Pineville, Louisiana on November 23, 1972
