Biographical / Historical
William A. Carter (1818-1881), a native of Virginia, arrived at Fort Bridger in 1857 with Col. Albert Sidney Johnston’s army during the “Utah War.” Carter became the sutler at Fort Bridger in 1859 and continued in that capacity until his death in 1881. Carter’s wife, Mary Elizabeth, continued to run the business until 1890. The family was involved in other business enterprises in the area, including cattle ranching, mining, logging, and operating a sawmill. William Carter also served as justice of the peace and probate judge
