Biographical / Historical
William Edwards Deming was born on October 14, 1900 in Sioux City, Iowa. His family moved to the Powell, Wyoming area in 1907. Deming attended school in Powell and later enrolled in the University of Wyoming. He graduated in 1921 with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He obtained graduate degrees in mathematics from the University of Colorado and Yale University. Dr. Deming also studied music theory. He wrote a number of musical compositions
Deming eventually settled in Washington D.C. with his family. He earned renown in mathematical physics and statistical methods, and was an international consultant in statistical analysis. Deming assisted post-war Japan with developing statistical quality control methods for manufacturing. In recognition of these efforts, the Deming Prize was established as an annual award for technical assistance to Japanese industry. Deming received numerous honors, including induction into the Science and Technology Hall of Fame. He died in 1993 in Washington D.C.
