Guide to the Cheyenne Kiwanis Club Collection

 Collection
Identifier: H2004-4

Scope and Content

The current series of Kiwanis bulletins was established in 1951. These publications are now a regular part of the organization identity. Prior to 1959, the bulletins were titled the Kiwanis Bull and the Kiwanis Missile. They took their permanent name “Kiwanis Telstar” in 1959. The name was chosen in recognition of the pioneer, earth-orbiting communications satellite then being prepared for launch. Contents include calendar of events; announcements; special programs; membership, Foundation, and district news, committee reports, and trivia. By 2002, over ninety percent of the Club’s membership had direct access to computer technology, making it possible for the weekly Telstar to be distributed to most of its members through email

Also included in this collection are fourteen volumes of the Club’s Directory and an 80th Anniversary brochure. The Directories include a brief club history, short biographical sketches and photographs of members, and miscellaneous club information

Biographical / Historical

The Cheyenne Kiwanis Club was founded in 1922 by a group of local business men which included Cheyenne attorney William B. Ross. Ross was later installed as the Club’s first president, and went on to be elected Governor of Wyoming in 1923. The local chapter was formed for the “…purpose of doing the human, helpful things that people, working as individuals, cannot accomplish; that governments should not be expected to do; and that need doing for the good of the community.” As of the year 2002, Cheyenne Kiwanis Club was the second largest Kiwanis Club in the world. The club continues to meet weekly at the Hitching Post Restaurant and Inn in Cheyenne
