Biographical / Historical

Dick J. Nelson was born in Mitchell County, Kansas, on May 29, 1875. His family moved to Crook County, Wyoming, in 1888 and began ranching. Nelson worked 45 years for the CB&Q Railroad, retiring in 1939 at Sheridan, Wyoming. A break from railroad work occurred during World War I, when he served in Europe as a first lieutenant in the 147th Engineers. Nelson and his wife moved to San Diego, California, after his retirement

He was a longtime member of the Wyoming State Historical Society, and President of the Wyoming State Society of San Diego County, California, from 1940 to 1951, serving as president emeritus after leaving that office.
