Biographical / Historical
Dick J. Nelson was born in Mitchell County, Kansas, on May 29, 1875. His family moved to Crook County, Wyoming, in 1888 and began ranching. Nelson worked 45 years for the CB&Q Railroad, retiring in 1939 at Sheridan, Wyoming. A break from railroad work occurred during World War I, when he served in Europe as a first lieutenant in the 147th Engineers. Nelson and his wife moved to San Diego, California, after his retirement
Nelson maintained a strong interest in Wyoming history. He was a longtime member of the Wyoming State Historical Society, and President of the Wyoming State Society of San Diego County, California, from 1940 to 1951, serving as president emeritus after leaving that office. He wrote a number of published historical works and poems. He died April 28, 1969
