Biographical / Historical
Francis E. Warren Air Force Base is located on Crow Creek a short distance west of the city of Cheyenne, WY. It is headquarters for one of the nation’s largest and most modern strategic ICBM missile units – the 90th Missile Wing. FE Warren AFB is unique for three reasons: 1. it is the longest continuously active military installation now designated as an air force base; 2. it is the only major operational AFB without airplanes and without an airstrip – it does, however, maintain a helicopter and helicopter landing pad; 3. it is the best maintained century old post or base remaining in the United States
Established in 1867 as an United States Army fort under the name of Fort DA Russell [named after a Civil War General], its initial purpose was to protect work crews of the Union Pacific Railroad and cross-country supply wagons. The Army’s 30th Infantry Regiment built wooden barracks and other structures, escorted supply wagons, and patrolled the area for marauding Indians. The installation was renamed F. E. Warren in 1930 to honor a former Wyoming territorial governor. FE Warren remained an Army installation until 1947 when control was passed to the United States Air Force where is continues to remain
