Biographical / Historical
Charles A. Guernsey (1854-1940) was a Wyoming rancher, legislator, and businessman. He came to Wyoming in 1880 and ranched on the Cheyenne River in northeastern Wyoming. Guernsey served in the territorial and state legislatures during the 1880s, 1890s, and 1900s. In 1890 he founded the town of Guernsey near the North Platte River. He established a ranch about a mile down the river from the town. Also in 1890, Guernsey acquired title to iron deposits near Hartville. In 1902 he leased this property to Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, which developed one of the great iron mines in the region. With royalties from this mine, and income from his ranch and other development interests, Guernsey became one of the wealthiest men in the state
