Biographical / Historical

The All American Indian Days celebration, held in August of each year in Sheridan, WY, brought together Indians from across North America, and enabled the re-creation of dances and ceremonies by Indians in authentic tribal dress. The basic objective of the event was to promote the improvement of inter-racial relations, better understanding of Indian culture, and general assistance through the North American Indian Foundation. Another goal of the event was apparently to bridge the cultural gap between Native Americans and other American groups

Also scheduled during this celebration was the National Miss Indian America Pageant which held its first competition in 1953. Any young woman from the North American continent of one-half or more Indian blood, who had never been married, had no dependents, was between the ages of 18 and 25, and had completed high school was eligible to compete. Each contestant had to wear the Authentic Tribal Dress of her Registered Tribe during the Pageant
