Biographical / Historical

William Thomas Mulloy, Ph.D. was a renowned anthropologist and archaeologist who served the state of Wyoming for many decades. Dr. Mulloy was instrumental in establishing the Office of the Wyoming State Archaeologist as well as the Wyoming Anthropological Museum in Laramie. Dr. Mulloy’s extensive field work took place throughout the American West and the South Pacific where he participated on Thor Heyerdahl’s Norwegian Archaeological Expedition which included visits to Tahiti and Pitcarin Island among others. He also did extensive site research on Easter Island off Chile’s western coast. Many of his field studies were funded by prominent foundations such as the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Act, and the Glenbow Foundation. During World War II, Dr. Mulloy served as a Major in the United States Army. One of his assignments included working as a Military Intelligence Officer at the Japanese Language School. He served on the faculty of the University of Wyoming in Laramie from 1948 to 1978, and at the University of Chile in Santiago where he was a Visiting Professor and Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Mulloy died in 1978
