Biographical / Historical
Major General George A. Custer was born in 1839 in New Rumley, Ohio. He graduated from West Point in 1861 as a Second Lieutenant of the United States Cavalry. His military career consisted of many memorable campaigns, the most famous of which took place on the Little Big Horn River in Montana against the Sioux Indians in 1876. Custer and his detachment of two hundred and seventy-seven troopers were surrounded by three thousand warriors and slain. Today that battleground has been memorialized as the “Custer Battlefield.”
