Biographical / Historical

In 1919 the Custer Battlefield Hiway Association was formed and worked in conjunction with the National Highways Association to build the famous Custer Battlefield Hiway. The highway, referred to as the “scenic route to the West,” stretches 1,500 miles from Des Moines, Iowa westward to the city of Glacier Park, Montana. The highway crosses four states [Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana], and passes through or near four Indian Reservations [Lower Brule, Pine Ridge, Crow, and Blackfeet]. The Custer Battlefield Hiway was named after Major General George Armstrong Custer as a way to revere and perpetuate his name
