Scope and Content

The records include letters from Ellen Carpenter (1955-1960) and from Jim Carpenter (1961-1967) to Mrs. P. Cooper Ellis, a poem about the Carpenter Hotel by Mrs. Ellis (1963), and newspaper clippings about the Carpenters, the Hotel, and the Atlantic City / South Pass area. Obituaries for the Carpenters are included.

Miscellaneous items include a 1952 notice of an annual meeting for Fremont County School District No. 7, signed by Mrs. C.E. Carpenter, District Clerk; a letter from Jim Carpenter’s daughter to Mrs. Ellis about her father’s death; a memorial service program for Jim Carpenter; two thank you notes from members of the Carpenter family (regarding the deaths of Bud (probably Clarence) and Jim); and a 1961 Pacific Power and Light Company publication with a 1958 photograph of Ellen Carpenter.

Biographical / Historical

Jim and Ellen Carpenter (brother and sister) came to Atlantic City as children in 1890. Ellen assisted her mother with running the Carpenter Hotel in Atlantic City. When their mother died in 1930, Ellen and Jim took over management of the hotel. Jim was an acknowledged authority on the history of the region, and guided visitors to prime hunting and fishing locations. Ellen died in 1961 at the age of 77. Jim died in 1968 at the age of 81.
