Guide to the Arthur Ernest Hatheway Fort McKinney Collection
Scope and Content
Two printed affidavits by Arthur Ernest Hatheway and Attorney Charles H. Burritt regarding the former’s arrest at Big Horn City and confinement at Fort McKinney. Hatheway was mistaken for a “deserter and horse-thief” and confined for a month before being acquitted by court martial. Hatheway’s affidavit provides information about Hatheway, and describes his arrest, treatment, and court martial. A plan of the fort’s guard house is part of Hatheway’s affidavit.
Burritt’s affidavit provides additional information including special orders related to the court martial, names of the members of the court, and details of his efforts in behalf of Hatheway.
