Biographical / Historical

John Dwight Woodruff (1847-1925) was a Fremont County pioneer and legislator. Born in 1847 in New York, he came west after the Civil War and worked as a freighter, trapper, and government scout. He went into the coal mining business in Big Muddy with B.B. Brooks, and the two men were partners with Clarence Richardson in the Chihuahua Lumber Company. Woodruff was the first settler in Owl Creek. He started out in cattle, switched to sheep and became prominent spokesman for the sheep industry in Wyoming. A staunch Republican, Woodruff served three terms in the legislature and was outspoken on his views and political philosophy, but at times he was sarcastic, whimsical and humorous.

In 1883, he married Josephine Doty who died in 1920. The couple had four children. Woodruff died on June 6, 1925 at his home in Shoshoni.
