Biographical Note

Beckwith & Company was a prominent commercial business in Uinta County. Asahel Collins Beckwith, a man with much business acumen, had been a rancher in Nebraska but found his true calling selling general merchandise in Southwest Wyoming and Northwest Utah under the business names of Beckwith & Company; Beckwith, Quinn and Company; and Beckwith and Lauder. In 1872, Beckwith relocated his commerical company to Evanston, and by the 1890s had expanded his area of operation from Evanston to include Uinta County, the surrounding area, and even places along the Union Pacific Railroad line. In addition, Beckwith branched out into banking, insurance, and coal.
