Scope and Content

Records pertaining to the Robert Burns memorial statue errected in Cheyenne and dedicated on November 11, 1929. The project was funded by Mary Gilchrist. Also included is a folder related to the Woman’s Club of Cheyenne with correspondence about Mrs. Gilchrist’s estate, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the golden jubilee, Wyoming Day, and the world peace effort.

Biographical Note

Mary Gemmell Gilchrist was born in 1840 in Scotland. In 1869, she emmigrated to American to join her husband Andrew Gilchrist. The Gilchrists settled in Cheyenne in 1875, following several years in Northern Colorado. After a start in the merchantile business, they ammassed a fortune in cattle, real estate, and bank stock. Andrew died in 1894. Mary remained in Cheyenne and devoted much of her time and energy to philanthropic activities. She died in January 1931 and is buried with Andrew in Lakeview Cemetery in Cheyenne.

Mary gifted the statue of Robert Burns to the City of Cheyenne in honor of her native Scotland. The statue stand in the small triangular park at the intersections of Randall Ave., Pioneer Ave., and 26th.
