Historical Note
The Wyoming Pioneer Home is an assisted living center administered by the State of Wyoming for Wyoming residents over 65 years old. The facility occupies 5.5 acres in Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis. Established by the State Legislature in 1949, it was first occupied in 1950, with a capacity of sixty-five guests housed in private rooms. In 1955, two wings were added on the west to be known as the Montgomery Home for the Blind. In 1957, two wings on the east were added. These additions provided accommodations for 132 guests without an enlargement of the service area.
In 1958, a program was established whereby the Wyoming Pioneer Home was given twelve nursing care beds at the Wyoming Sanitarium in Basin, now the Wyoming Retirement Center, to assist in caring for those with more extensive medical needs.
When the Board of Charities and Reform was abolished by popular vote on a constitutional amendment in 1990, the Pioneer Home became a part of the Department of Health. It is now under the Aging Division.
