History of the Department

Chapter 73, Session Laws of Wyoming, 1951, established the Wyoming Natural Resources Board. It assumed the powers and duties of the State Planning and Water Conservation Board. In general, the board was charged with formulating programs and policies, as well as investigating issues related to the state's resources. With much of the state experiencing drought conditions in 1955, the board was also empowered to enter into contracts with the federal government for the construction of water development projects. The Wyoming Natural Resource Board was abolished by Chapter 94, Session Laws of Wyoming, 1969. The 1969 law created the Wyoming Department of Economic Planning and Development, which was assigned the powers and duties of the Natural Resource Board.
