Scope and Content

The Frank A. Hadsell collection consists of various records about his social, business and political interests. Much of the collection is comprised of correspondence. Topics include county and state Republican party politics, agriculture (particularly sheep), efforts to split Fremont County, good roads movement, public lands, and efforts to get US Marshal appointment. Correspondents include F.E. Warren, C.D. Clark, F. Chatterton, B.B. Brook and Willis Van Devanter.

Of particular interest is the correspondence during the period Hadsell served as US Marshal for Wyoming (1899-1907). Included are letters and messages relative to the activities and pursuit of the Wild Bunch, including Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid and Kid Curry. Information relates to the Union Pacific train robberies at Wilcox and Tipton, the Great Northern train robbery at Wagner, Montana, and Winnemucca, Nevada, bank robber and other turn-of-the century incidents.

Also included are a letter from Bill Nye, dated January 19, 1880, about his view of how the Ute Indians should be dealt with, and a letter from James Averill to Hadsell, dated March 25, 1889, about payment of Averill's debts.

Biographical Note

Frank A. Hadsell (1852-1927) came to Wyoming in 1880 and established himself in the livestock business. He was elected to the Territorial Council (Senate) in 1886, the General Assembly in 1888 and state senate in 1911 and 1913. He served as Carbon County sheriff (1889-1893), US Marshal (1899-1907), and warden of the Wyoming State Penitentiary (1920-1927).

Abstract

The Frank A. Hadsell Collection consists of records related to the social, business and political interests of Frank Hadsell. He is best known for serving as US Marshall for Wyoming 1899-1907 and his involvement with Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Jim Averill and Ella "Cattle Kate" Watson.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into two series: Records and Publications. The publications consists of many books either owned by members of the family or relate to the family's New England roots.

Acquisition Information

Donated by Mrs. Frank A. Hadsell in 1929 as B-542. Reaccessioned as H-70-18 in 1970.
