Guide to the Cheyenne Light, Fuel and Power Collection
Scope and Content
This collection consists mainly of records pertaining to the operations of the company, including annual reports and monthly and operating reports for electricity, gas, and steam. Of special interest are photocopies of public records about the Brush-Swan Electric Company, which preceded the company, and an 1879 letter about the future outlook for electricity. Newsletters from Public Service Commission of Colorado newsletters reveal much information about early Depression era and post-war era utility developments, public relations, and utility services offered (including selling and maintenance of household appliances). A large collection of photographs has been placed in the historical photograph collection (see P2004-1).

Organized in 1900, it took over two local utilities, Brush-Swan Electric Light Company and Cheyenne City Gas Company. It operated as a local utility until it became part of Northern Colorado Power Company in 1906, Western Light and Power Company in 1914 and Public Service Company of Colorado in 1923, where it remained until 1963 when it became an independent utility. In 2005, it was acquired by Black Hills Corporation and its name was changed to Black Hills Energy as of February 1, 2016.
