Scope and Content

This collection contains various records reflecting the interests and activities of the family. Most are personal and scholastic records of Edward Durbin (1884-1935), a son who had a penchant for writing poetry. Portions of a scrapbook and several individual records document the work of the Methodist Church in Wyoming. It includes a photograph of Abraham Lincoln from a periodical.

Biographical Note

Thomas Durbin (1847-1936) was a prominent sheep and cattle rancher in Laramie County. From 1870 to 1890, he and a brother managed Durbin Land and Cattle Company. He breifly moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, during the 1870s Black Hills gold rush. Thomas helped organize the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, served as bailiff of the State Supreme Court, and was active in the Methodist Church and several masonic lodges.

In 1872, he married Harriet "Hattie" Johnson (1853-1940). They had four sons, three of whom died in childhood. Hattie's brother, E.P. Johnson, was one of the first settlers in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He and fellow Yale graduate W.W. Corlette arrived in Cheyenne in July 1867.

Abstract

This collection contains various records reflecting the interests and activities of the Durbin family. It includes a photograph of Abraham Lincoln from a periodical, a program from the funeral of President William McKinley in 1901, and the 1897 Thanksgiving Proclaimation by President McKinley.
