Biography / History
Edith K. O. Clark was born in Washington, DC on September 7, 1881. She came to Wyoming in May 1906 and secured a position as a teacher in a rural school in Johnson County. She later taught in Sheridan. In November 1908, Edith Clark was elected the Sheridan County Superintendent of Schools. She served in that position for six years and organized the first Sheridan County Association of School District Trustees.
In 1914, Edith Clark was elected the Wyoming State Superintendent of Public Instruction on the Republican Party ticket, serving from January 4, 1915 until January 6, 1919. She was also a member of the School Code Commission, which submitted a plan to the 1917 legislature to create a State Department of Education
Edith Clark was not a candidate for re-election, having enlisted in the army in 1918 with the YWCA for overseas duty as soon as her term of office had been completed. Upon returning from France, in the fall of 1919, she became actively engaged in YWCA work in Mississippi. Returning to Cheyenne in September 1922, she engaged in business for several years until moving back to her ranch in Johnson County. Edith Clark died June 2, 1936 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
