Biographical Note
William D. Pickett was born October 2, 1827 near Huntsville, Alabama amd served in the Mexican War and in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. A civil engineer for railroads by trade, he moved west in the 1870s and settled on a ranch near Greybull in 1883 which he owned until 1904. While in Wyoming, he served several terms in the state legislature. Pickett was one of the first members of the prestegious Boone and Crockett Club organized by Theodore Roosevelt in 1887. George Bird Grinnell wrote that Pickett "has had an experience hunting grizzly bear greater probably than that of any man who ever lived. A keen sportsman, a lover of outdoor life, and a Southern gentleman, Colonel Pickett represents the ideals of the Boone and Crockett Club." (abstracted from the Wyoming Outdoor Hall of Fame website https://wgfd.wyo.gov/Get-Involved/Outdoor-Hall-of-Fame/Colonel-William-D-Pickett). In 1883 he killed four bears in one night, for which Four Bear Creek and later the post office Four Bear were named for.
Maurice E. Pickett was born in Pennsylvania in 1873. He married his second wife, Hazel H. Sample, born 1894 in Iowa, in Denver, Colorado, on November 19, 1927.
William D. and Maurice E. Pickett do not appear to be related to eachother.
