John A. Campbell Diaries, 1869-1876

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

Diaries of John A. Campbell, 9 volumes.

The diaries cover Governor Campbell's years in Wyoming Territory, and almost two years after he left the Governor's Office. Entries in the diaries consist of brief recordings of the day's activities and events. Unlike the Wunderly diaries, there are no expressions of opinions or feelings. Typed transcripts of the diaries are included in the collection, except for the 4th volume, 1871. Edited entries were published in Volume 10 of the Annals of Wyoming, 1938. However, these end at February 24, 1875. The handwriting is difficult to read in places, resulting in some transcription errors in both the typed and the published versions.

The 1869 diary contains genealogical notes on the Campbell family, with dates of birth, marriage, and death for some family members, dating from 1796. Additional notes include addresses, 1870 election expenses, general expenses, information on livestock in the 1873 diary, and other miscellaneous entries. The 1874 diary includes a small newspaper clipping about the prevention of scarlet fever.
