08.01 Marriage Licenses - Originals, circa 1913-1951

 File — Box: 1

Scope and Contents

Documents include original marriage licenses, applications (or affidavits) with corroborative statement, certificates of marriage, marriage examinations, and letters of consent from parents or guardians of minors. Marriage licenses are the authorization for the marriage; the marriage application (or affidavit) is the statement of the groom that there is no legal impediment to his marriage to the stated intended wife and provides name, age, and residence. The corroborative statement included in the application (or affidavit) is the same form as that of the intended groom. Upon completion of the application, the prospective bride and groom were required to take a medical examination to detect "social" or venereal diseases, a statement of findings required to be filed with the County Clerk prior to issuing the marriage license (S.L. 1921, Chapter 160, Sections 15 and 16). Upon completion of the ceremony, the certificate of marriage, stating place, date, official and witnesses was completed and one copy returned to the Clerk for filing.
