Scope and Contents

Monograph (written study or report) by prisoner J. C. Shuckers describing the penitentiary at Laramie, prison life, penal and reform theory and measures, and penitentiary administration.

Shuckers was incarcerated for forgery, but was a skilled writer and artist. The warden made use of his penmanship in the bertillion books and in creating this monograph. Shuckers later used it as collateral during his parole board hearings and when petitioning the governor, see 04.
