Scope and Contents

Arrangement: Correspondence in letterpress volumes in Boxes 2-4 and correspondence from 1888-1912 in Boxes 5-48 are arranged chronologically. Correspondence from 1913-1979 in Boxes 49-203 is arranged alphabetically by decade. Some early microfilmed correspondence is arranged numerical (indexes microfilmed as well).

Microfilm: 1880-1939

Incoming and outgoing correspondence on the duties of the state engineer. Topics include water laws, individual water permits, interstate stream issues, Carey Act projects, legislation and river compacts. Among the correspondents are permit owners, conservation and irrigation districts, state agencies, governors, national organizations, and federal agencies.
