00.00 Cheyenne Charter - An Act to Incorporate the City of Cheyenne, 1869

 File — Box: 2

Scope and Contents

A printed copy of a territorial city "charter" act entitled: "An Act to Incorporate the City of Cheyenne." Prior to statehood in 1890, for a town to become incorporated, the action had to be approved through passage of specific legislation by the Territorial government. There were only five "charter" towns incorporated in this manner. They were Cheyenne, 1869; Laramie, 1873/74; and Buffalo, Rawlins, and Sheridan, all in 1877. After statehood, General Incorporation Laws went into effect, which precluded the need for legislative approval.
